Nighttime Economy Strategy – Newark and Sherwood

We partnered with Newark and Sherwood District Council (NSDC) to provide specialist guidance in developing an Evening and Nighttime Economy Strategy for the district. Newark and Sherwood plays a key role in the economy of Nottinghamshire, with its characterful market towns, vibrant high streets, independent retailers, food and beverage providers, and unique heritage assets that showcase a rich English history.

Newark, the largest town in the district, has an urban area home to 43,000 people. Our work with NSDC aims to support local residents and businesses to flourish, while also attracting visitors to experience everything the towns of Newark and Sherwood have to offer.

However, the Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the local economy, particularly the evening economy. Hospitality, accommodation, attractions, and services were heavily affected, with nightlife reopening only in July 2021 and the potential threat of new restrictions looming. These challenges were compounded by national trends: between 2005 and 2015, 44% of nightclubs closed, and between 2001 and 2016, 25% of pubs shut.

What it focussed on:

In response, we collaborated with NSDC and local stakeholders to trial new ideas and pioneer fresh approaches. Our goal was to develop a strategy that would:

  • Assess the current state of the evening and night-time economy
  • Inform SMART short-, medium-, and long-term actions to build a vibrant, inclusive, and safe night-time environment
  • Support people and high street businesses to safely reopen and adapt to the medium- and long-term effects of the pandemic

The strategy focuses on the district’s four main urban and economic centres: Newark, Southwell, Ollerton, and Edwinstowe. Each area has been considered individually, ensuring tailored approaches that respond to their unique characteristics and needs. The plan explores strategies to:

  • Increase footfall and dwell time
  • Attract more visitors in the evening and at night
  • Improve safety and security
  • Expand cultural and event-based activities
  • Drive increased visitor spend across the district

This approach ensures that Newark and Sherwood can revitalise its high streets, create a sustainable night-time economy, and adapt to the evolving challenges of the post-pandemic environment.
